Webster Bank Arena is proud to announce the Martin Luther King Classic Basketball Tournament presented by Yale New Haven Health System, which will take place on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 19. Sponsors of the event include Bridgeport Field of Dreams and Future Stars Children’s Foundation.
"We are thrilled to host the Martin Luther King Classic Basketball Tournament," Webster Bank Arena President Howard Saffan said. "The day will be a wonderful culmination of great basketball between some of the best high school programs in Connecticut and honoring the great Dr. King."
The event will not only include four basketball games, but will remember the legacy of one of the greatest Americans in Dr. King. The arena will play some of Dr. King’s greatest moments on the video board and players will read some of his speeches as well.
"Dr. King led by example, urging peaceful community engagement as a means to address pressing issues of the day and foster better relations among neighbors," New Haven Mayor Toni N. Harp said. "This basketball tournament bearing his name is a terrific example of how to engage those principles here and now and advance the same timeless principles of tolerance and acceptance."
Eight schools will participate in four games throughout the day, as the games will run from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The schedule for the day is as follows, with the second team listed playing as the home team.
12:00 p.m. Kolbe v. Bassick
2:00 p.m. Cross v. Harding
4:00 p.m. Sacred Heart v. Notre Dame - Fairfield
6:00 p.m. Hillhouse v. Central
The day will feature some of the most talented basketball players in the state and reignite long-term rivalries in both New Haven and Bridgeport.
"As the father of two Central High School graduates, I'm very proud of their success on the court and look forward to a chance to root for the Hilltoppers at Webster Bank Arena,” Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch said. “Thank you to Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment for giving Bridgeport kids an opportunity to showcase their talents on such a grand stage. I encourage residents from throughout the region to come see our improving downtown and enjoy a great day of basketball in Bridgeport."
